I returned my 5D back to Costco...

Oct 8, 2007

I had it for just about 15 months and got a full refund.

I told the store manager that the 5D had dropped almost 20% in just the last week and I asked if they would give me the price difference between what I paid for it and what it was currently selling for. He said the best thing to do was bring it back and he would give me a full refund. If I wanted to after that, I could buy it again online for the lower price.

This is not Costco's fault that Canon is dumping 5Ds at a lower price. Costco will get their money back from Canon. Canon is doing this to them selves but most people can't take their 5D back and get a full refund.

I know a camera is not suppose to be an investment but this kills the resale value for you and I (well not me) when we do decide to sale it.

I am suprised that costco even allows this. If it were me I would not take the camera from you. Using the camera for over a year and complaining about the price drop? Wow they are really leniant.

I think you are abusing Costco's return policy, which is quite unethical. Good for Costco that its return policy is 90 days now. Why don't you buy another 5D, return it on the 89th day, and just keep doing it? In theory, you can get free camera for life.. Shameless...

This is the exageration pushed to the limit

In reply to EOSMan • Oct 8, 2007

How can Costco do such refunds...You did use and took advantage of the cam for 1.5 years, it's yours now !!

What will do people that bought a Playstation 3 last month during next Xmas. Sony will lower a lot the price...ask for a refund ??

The price can be fixed freely right ?? You want it, you buy it...

Strange habits, really ;0)

How is it abusing if it is (was) their policy?

In reply to GZZ • Oct 8, 2007

If I sell you something and tell you that you can return it anytime for any reason, how is that abusing their return policy?

I guess only in Paris is 15 months equal to 1.5 years.

Wow, that's completely out of line. A lot of electronic products have dramatic price drops over a short period of time -- cameras, computers and so on. It's completely expected.

It's because of actions like yours that Costco changed their policy. Seriously, how can you justify returning a camera that you used for more than a year? Because the price dropped, which is expected in the ever-evolving DSLR market? Give me a break. Completely unethical and self-centered.

Perhaps "rip-off artist who scams to get something for nothing" is more accurate.

"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."
----William Shakespeare, King Henry VI; Part 2, Act 4, Scene II

Must have been a reason for saying that... You might try adhering to the spirit, rather than the letter of Costco's policy. They say that about the law, too!

I cannot believe some people. I would imagine you would go mad if your mortgage company asked for your house back because it had grown in value.

I only hope that the 5D doesn't go back on the shelf

Only if it passes the red-face test. If I were you, I would feel so embarassed returning the camera after 15 months not even mention posting the action here. Are you proud of yourself?

I've just had an idea.... I'll take my D30 back to Jessops and see what they say when I ask for a full refund. I paid nearly £2,000 for it in 2002. Its worth about £150 now.

What do you think they will say?

back in my youth...

I used to work at REI (outdoor sports store). They had a similar 100% return, no questions asked policy.

One day a fellow came in with two dozen climbing harnesses. Most of them tattered, all of them over ten years old. A fellow employee recognized him as the operator of an outdoor school. Anyway, the guy returned them for two dozen brand new harnesses. Free new equipment for his business that made a profit.

Sure it was his right to do so, it was company policy. Didn't prevent every single person working that day from thinking of him as a major league scumbag.

Even if Canon does not reduce prices on the 5D, resale price is going to fall, because newer, better and cheaper DSLR cameras will follow the 5D. That is a fact of life in the electronic age.

And yet REI profited...

off of that return policy all of those years from tens of thousands of customers knowing that 10% of the people would actually use it. And then did what, cried when someone held them to their policy?

They want they cake and eat it too. Gee, give me a break people. The corporations know exactly what they are doing.

No, corporations do not profit directly from customer-friendly return policies.

By the way, Costco is known for its good treatment of employees and customers. However, some people, like yourself, have caused them to pull back on some of their overly fair return policies.

Yes they do profit. They profit from the 90% that like the security of their anytime return policy that end up forgetting where they bought it or lose their receipt or too lazy to return it.

You don't think this is factored into their pricing?

And they will lose business because of it.
